Mobil has been talking about this proposal for about 2 years; they have held community meetings with the help of the Santa Barbara County staff, and have organized focus groups and community support groups for the project. Major oil wells are not easily approved in this area. However, they have not filed a `real' application in those 2 years.
We have learned and confirmed that Mobil plans to submit their proposal in an application to Santa Barbara County on Thursday, February 9, 1995. In fact, we also learned that a substantial component of the Clearview application was submitted on December 31, 1994 to the Santa Barbara County Air Pollution Control District (SBAPCD); the filing had to be in 1994 to preserve certain air pollution `credits' obtained by ARCO and Mobil for the air pollution reduction caused by the `Seep Tents' that ARCO installed off Coal Oil Point.
We are now studying the application submitted to the SBAPCD.
Our Academic Senate committee completed its report on January 26, 1995. I hope to place the text of that report here soon.
Here is the text of the findings and recommendations presented in our report. They are in the form of a resolution of the Academic Senate; the resolution was passed unanimously by the 34 members of the UCSB Faculty Legislature present at the January 26 meeting of that body.
On January 29, 1995, the Santa Barbara News-Press published an editorial that was critical of the UCSB Faculty Legislature. Here is a letter I sent in response to that editorial, in postscript format. Most of the letter was published on Feb. 2, 1995 on the editorial page; among the omissions were the WWW address, the fact that our committee actually went down to Mobil's office in downtown Santa Barbara to meet with them, and the positive statements about UCSB.
