Course Description:

Welcome to Physics 105B.  This is the second quarter of upper division Classical Mechanics for Physics majors.   This quarter we will cover the two body problem, physics in non-inertial frames of reference, rotation of rigid bodies, normal modes of oscillations, hamiltonian mechanics, collision theory, and special relativity.  If time permits we will also talk about non linear systems and chaos.
The textbook is Classical Mechanics by John Taylor.

Homework:

Homework assignments will be posted weekly on this website.  You will need to turn them in by placing them in the dedicated Physics 105B box on the 1st floor of Broida Hall (next to the PSC).  Solutions to the homework will also be posted here after the due date.
Late homework will only be accepted with a Dr's note or equivalent.

Exams:

There will be one midterm and one final exam.  You will be allowed to bring two sheets of papers to the exams.  No need to memorize formulas.
The midterm will be on Thursday May 10th, during regular class time.  The final will be Wednesday June 13th, 12-3 pm.
If you miss the midterm with a Dr's note or equivalent, your grade will be based on the homework and the final only.  If you miss the final (again with a Dr's note or equivalent), you will be assigned an "Incomplete", and you will take the final the next time that Physics 105B is offered, at which time the "Incomplete" will be turned into a letter grade.  In other words: there will be no make-up exams.

Grading:

The grade for the course will be based on the homeworks (15%), the midterm (35%) and the final (50%).
