Oil Production at Platform Holly

Platform Holly is the offshore oil platform that currently operates in the ocean, several miles west of Coal Oil Point. This platform started operation in the mid-1960's.

The fate of Holly in the Clearview project is of some interest. On the one hand, Mobil emphasizes that oil extraction will ultimately be transferred from the offshore Platform Holly to the onshore Clearview facility. They emphasize that the danger of an oil spill into the ocean will be thereby reduced.

On the other hand, the numbers indicate that Mobil plans an escalation of oil extraction at Platform Holly between now and 2000. The plots below clearly indicate this escalation. New oil wells will be drilled from Platform Holly. Danger due to an offshore oil spill will increase between now and 2000.

If the Clearview project is approved, Mobil plans to cease Holly operations in 2001.

It is worth noting that the oil fields accessible with the drilling of new wells from Platform Holly are also accessible from the proposed Clearview site. Immediate cessation of oil extraction from Holly, and subsequent extraction from the onshore Clearview facility, would pose less risk to the environment than continuing operations at Holly.

On the other hand, the Clearview facility is closer to homes, apartments, dormitories, the Isla Vista School, the Devereux Foundation, and the U.C. Child Care Center. There is some risk of an accident at Clearview that could injure people in those places.

Historical Holly Oil Production top next last

[Historical Barrels per Day vs. Year From 1968 to 1994]
Above is the historical oil production from Platform Holly. The data, including the total amount of oil extracted, and the remaining reserve, are from the California State Lands Commission.

Projection of Holly Oil Production top next last

[Projection of Barrels per Day vs. Year From 1995 to 2030]
In blue above I add my evaluation of the trend of oil production from Platform Holly, assuming no new wells are drilled from it. The total given is the sum of extrapolated production, and the error expresses the accuracy of the extrapolation. From what I understand, `recompletion' of the existing wells on Holly will not alter the total amount of oil that can be extracted from Holly, but only extract it faster.

Mobil's Planned Holly Oil Production top last

[Mobil Projected Barrels per Day vs. Year From 1964 to 2030]
In green above I add Mobil's projection of oil extraction from Platform Holly, in conjunction with the Clearview project. The numbers come from Mobil's projections provided to the Chancellor's task force on Clearview. One can surmise that Mobil plans to drill new wells from Holly. These wells presumably will drill into the west end of the South Ellwood oil field, where Mobil already owns leases. The onshore Clearview project is planned to drill into the east of the South Ellwood oil field.

In a meeting with our the Academic Senate Special Committee on Clearview, on October 17, 1994, Mobil indicated that should the Clearview project go forward, then they would stop extraction of oil from Platform Holly at the end of the year 2001.
