Jalama

Description:

Jalama (pronounced "halama") is a stunningly beautiful place, as you can see from the picture above. It's also a very hard-core sailing spot. Mast-high waves are not uncommon. On a good day, you will see several sponsored sailors pulling off killer back and forward loops as well as a few unlucky sailors dragging their trashed rigs out of the water after breaking a mast. This is a challenging spot for advanced sailors. Jalama is best when the wind blows from the northwest. Check the current conditions at the Call of the Wind.

Directions:

Jalama is on the coast a few miles north of Pt Conception. It takes about an hour to drive there from Santa Barbara. Take Highway 101 north. About a mile or two after 101 breaks away from the coast and actually starts going north, get on Highway 1 north towards Lompoc. Don't worry about the construction signs if you are going on the weekend. After about 12 miles, turn left onto Jalama road. Keep your eyes open because it's easy to miss. Jalama road is about 14 miles of curves, which is good or bad depending on if you are a driving enthusiast or someone who gets carsick. Jalama road ends at a state park where you will park, rig, and launch. The day use fee is $3.50. You can also camp there (for around $10).
