CHAPTER VI: STUDENT CONDUCT AND DISCIPLINE
- Maintenance of Disciplinary Records
- The official record of all UCSB students is the University
transcript. Disciplinary actions taken against a student are not
noted on the student's University transcript unless the student
has been dismissed. In all such cases, the Office of the Registrar
shall mark the permanent record card (from which transcripts are made)
with ``Readmission Subject to Approval by the Chancellor.''
- Official disciplinary records are maintained in the office of
the Dean of Students. The disciplinary hearing, the outcome, and
all records relating to the case are confidential and not open
to review except to University officials on a ``need to know'' basis
as required by law, and as outlined in section 4 below.
- Disciplinary records will be maintained in the office of the
Dean of Students for five years and then destroyed unless the
Dean of Students determines there is good reason to retain the
record beyond that date.
- When potential employers, governmental agencies, or other institutions
of higher education solicit information about a student's conduct
while attending UCSB and if the student has signed a release form
accompanying the solicitation, the office of the Dean of Students
will review the disciplinary records file to determine if the student has
been found guilty of misconduct. In those cases where the student
has such a record, the information will be provided to the requesting
party.
- In order to insure that minor and non-recurring infractions do
not negatively impact the student's academic career beyond UCSB, all
disciplinary records will be reviewed by the committee of jurisdiction
in order to determine whether the student's record should be expunged.
A student may petition for such review at approximately two years
from the date the initial sanction was imposed, or upon graduation
from the University, whichever comes first.
The above is excerpted from the January, 1991 revision
of the University of California, Santa Barbara Campus Regulations
Applying to Campus Activities, Organizations, and Students. That
document is available from the Office of the Dean of Students (893-4467).
