Students at UCSB are expected to adhere to the highest standards of academic conduct.
A student aware of instances of academic misconduct, such as cheating, plagiarism, or collusion, should contact either the faculty member who is leading the course where the misconduct occurred, or the Office of the Dean of Students (893-4467).
Further detailed information:
Faculty at UCSB have substantial disciplinary authority. Faculty can also refer matters of academic misconduct to the Office of the Dean of Students, for evaluation and a possible hearing.
In either case, faculty are required to file a Faculty Report Form, with the Office of the Dean of Students.
Generally, evaluation and a hearing are good ideas if the faculty member is unsure of guilt or innocence, if a strong sanction such as suspension or dismissal is warranted, or if a record of the misconduct accessible to future employers or school admission officers is desired.
When no evaluation or hearing is requested, it is usual for the Dean of Students to issue a letter of reprimand to the student, but not to provide outside inquiries with records of the incident.
Contact the Office of the Dean of Students at 893-4467 if further information is needed.
