Clearview
Clearview is the name of an oil extraction project proposed
by the Mobil Corporation.
The oil well complex would sit on the campus of the University of
California at Santa Barbara (UCSB), but the wells themselves
would extend out under the ocean, to tap a proven offshore oil field
(the South Ellwood Field) under the Santa Barbara Channel
in front of the UCSB campus.
On June 22, 1995, the UCSB Chancellor, Chancellor Yang,
announced that UCSB did not intend to lease Mobil the land for
the Clearview site.
On February 9, 1996 the Mobil Corporation announced
that they would cease to pursue the project. They had
studied sites off the UCSB campus, and concluded that those
sites were not economically feasible.
